In partnership with the Rare Book Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Schoenberg Institute of Manuscript Studies (SIMS) at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries is pleased to announce the 10th Annual Lawrence J. Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age.

Despite the linguistic and cultural complexity of many regions of the premodern world, religion supplies the basis of a strong material and textual cohesion that both crosses and intertwines boundaries between communities. This year’s theme, “Intertwined Worlds,” will highlight the confluence of expressions of belief, ritual, and social engagement emerging in technologies and traditions of the world’s manuscript cultures, often beyond a single religious context. It will consider common themes and practices of textual, artistic, literary, and iconographic production in religious life across time and geography, from ancient precedents to modern reception and dissemination in the digital age.

MAA News – Annual Meeting Updates

Mark your calendars for the 2018 Annual Meeting, to be held on March 1 – 3 at Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia). More details here. The Program and registration will be available in the coming months. We look forward to seeing you in Atlanta!

We are delighted to announce that the 2019 Annual Meeting will take place at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA) on March 7 – 9. The Meeting was originally to have been hosted by the University of Colorado at Boulder, but due to unforeseen circumstances the University was obliged to retract the bid. We are very grateful to the community of medievalists at the University of Pennsylvania for stepping in on relatively short notice. The Call for Papers will be distributed in January 2018.

The 2020 Annual Meeting will take place at the University of California, Berkeley, on March 26 – 28.

If your institution is interested in hosting the 2021 Annual Meeting, please contact Executive Director Lisa Fagin Davis for information about submitting a proposal. Ideally, the 2021 host should be located in an easily-reachable locale in the Mid- or Southwest, with meeting and hotel space for 300-400 attendees, institutional support, and a community of medievalists willing to organize and run the conference.

MAA News – Call for Fellows Nominations

To all Members of the Medieval Academy of America:

Members are hereby invited to submit nominations for the election of Fellows and Corresponding Fellows of the Medieval Academy of America for 2018.

The title of Fellow was created in 1926 to recognize and honor those scholars among us who over the years have made outstanding contributions to Medieval Studies through their teaching, scholarship, and service. Nominations are encouraged in all the varied fields encompassed by Medieval Studies, and all members of the Medieval Academy are free to submit nominations. Those nominations are overseen by the Fellows Nominating Committee, which is empowered to intervene only if there is some notable inequity in the list of proposed nominees. Existing Fellows will cast their ballots in December and January. The election of 2018 will operate under the by-laws and procedures adopted in 2013 and revised in 2015.

Existing Fellows may also have chosen to become Emeriti or Emeritae Fellows, which has the effect of opening up additional slots the following year for the election of new Fellows. Such Emeriti/Emeritae Fellows retain the position of Fellow in every respect but relinquish their right to vote in the election of new Fellows.

Current bylaws prescribe that there may be a total of up to 125 Fellows who at the time of election are members of the Academy and residents of North America, and in addition up to 75 Corresponding Fellows who at the time of election are residents of countries outside of North America. Following the rules established by the current bylaws, three (3) slots are available for the year 2018, for which there must be at least six (6) nominations. For the nomination of Corresponding Fellows no established minimum number of nominations is required.

MAA News – Upcoming Grant Deadlines

The Medieval Academy of America invites applications for the following grants. Please note that applicants must be members in good standing as of September 15 in order to be eligible for Medieval Academy awards.

Birgit Baldwin Fellowship
The Birgit Baldwin Fellowship provides a grant of $20,000 to support a graduate student in a North American university who is researching and writing a dissertation for the Ph.D. on any subject in French medieval history that can be realized only by sustained research in the archives and libraries of France. It may be renewed for a second year upon demonstration of satisfactory progress. (Deadline 15 November 2017)

Schallek Fellowship
The Schallek Fellowship provides a one-year grant of $30,000 to support Ph.D. dissertation research in any relevant discipline dealing with late-medieval Britain (ca. 1350-1500). (Deadline 15 October 2017)

Travel Grants
The Medieval Academy provides a limited number of travel grants to help Academy members who hold doctorates but are not in full-time faculty positions, or are contingent faculty without access to institutional funding, attend conferences to present their work. (Deadline 1 November 2017 for meetings to be held between 16 February and 31 August 2018)

Awarded to a first monograph of outstanding quality in the field of medieval studies.

ELIZABETH A. WHITEHEAD VISITING PROFESSORS

One or Two Positions for 2018-2019
Deadline: October 31

Term: Early September to June 1.

Eligibility: A senior scholar with a significant record of publication and teaching in a North American institution who is a faculty or staff member at a Cooperating Institution.  Preference will be given to those who have not received recent support from the School. Candidates who have held the Whitehead Professorship may apply if the previous term was at least five years prior.

Project: A research project that utilizes the facilities of the School and enriches the academic program of the School. Word limit for project description: 1500 words.

Seminar: Whitehead Professors offer a seminar during the winter term (late November to late March) and contribute to the academic program in other significant ways, such as mentoring or advising students at the School and participating in School trips and excursions. Please note that the Blegen Library may be closed for 6 months during the spring and/or summer 2019. School faculty and students will have access to other libraries in Athens, and the Whitehead Professors will be able to work with the Blegen librarians in planning seminar activity while the Blegen library is inaccessible. Word limit for seminar proposal: 300 words.

Compensation: Stipend of $35,000 plus round-trip coach airfare to Athens, board at Loring Hall for the Whitehead Professor (one-half senior rate for spouse, and one-half student rate for dependents) and School housing. Hotel and transportation on all five School trips.
